Electronic artist, producer and DJ Echo Juliet channels memories of the vast Essex countryside and visions of a dark future in their new single, ‘Red Sun’.
Taken from her forthcoming ‘mini album’ ‘Abandon Reality’, ‘Red Sun’ is a beautifully-crafted journey with a sinister edge. We start off with layered marimbas reminiscent of Mira Masa’s early bedroom masterpieces. The melodies take an introspective turn and make great use of space, searing over the percussion, really giving the track its name.
Knowing when to start and when to stop is an art form in itself; Echo Juliet shows us that they know how to negotiate the tension masterfully, bringing the everything together at just the right moment. This track showcases some clear influences in Bonobo and Gold Panda, but stakes its claim in a deeply original way.
Discussing the inspiration for the track. Echo Juliet adds further weight to their already impressive piece of work, saying: “I was (also) reflecting on the fact that we’re getting more and more red skies now as a result of pollution and wildfires, and that marginalised people are always affected most by the climate crisis. A thing which seemed beautiful to me has now become a warning sign.”
In short, this is a stunning debut, and we can’t wait to hear what comes next. ‘Red Sun’ is out now, with the ‘mini album’ coming in late October.
