Newham’s own Lizzie Berchie has shared her neo-soul masterpiece “We Found Love”, a softly stunning piece of work.
The track is an eclectic mix of gospel and bossanova, a mix that immediately puts me at ease. Speaking of her stylistic choices, she says: “I wanted to wrap the melody with a warm summery sonic. I was listening to a lot of Minnie Riperton and she was very much an inspiration for this track.” - this influence shines through beautifully, with the vocal melodies being equal parts powerful and tender.
Interwoven with playful and percussive string sections that made us feel somewhere between Rio Di Janeiro and The Sims 2. The latter reference might seem flippant or disingenuous, but this couldn’t be further from the truth, given the game’s soundtrack was composed by Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo, and delivers pangs of childlike bliss and carefree exploration straight to my gut.
The song opens up beautifully; from playful beginnings to rich and sincere climax, descending into a spiral of warm keys and plucked strings. We land softly with an ethereal choir, played out by the repetition of a remarkably simple and touching sentiment: “We’ve got it all”.
“We Found Love” is out now.
