Dream pop newcomer Olivesque has shared her new track, Death, a DIY treasure that has piqued our interest.
The track’s optimistic composition contrasts beautifully with the song’s nihlistic lyrical content, striking up a delicate balance of woven-together jangly guitars reminiscent of shoegaze giants Ride, held up by a controlled yet raucus percussive backing and punctuated by a dark and playful lyricism that brings it all together.
Speaking about the song’s creation, she says: “this was written in peak lockdown and I feel like lyrically I was taking the piss out of my situation in a very romantic but dark way. The lyrics are very reflective of that period and my mindset towards it. There’s something about darkness and melancholy that I really enjoy”.
This is not lost on us as listeners, a community of people that had to find the joy amonst the misery. This punchy articulation of that collective experience will leave you feeling, in Olive’s own words, bittersweet, but in our words, wanting more.
Death is out now on all streaming platforms.
